The Parasocial Attachment Test

How attached are you to someone who doesn't know you exist?

About this assessment

How attached are you to a person who has never heard your name? Before you start, pick the ONE figure you feel closest to — a creator, streamer, celebrity, artist, fictional character, or AI companion — and answer every item about that single relationship. Inspired by Horton & Wohl (1956), who coined the term 'parasocial'; the Parasocial Interaction Scale (Rubin, Perse & Powell, 1985); and the Multidimensional Measure of Parasocial Relationships (2022) — and timely, since 'parasocial' was Cambridge Dictionary's 2025 Word of the Year. The test measures five dimensions: felt intimacy, time and ritual, boundary blur, social substitution, and separation distress. To be honest from the start: parasocial bonds are normal, near-universal, and can be genuinely healthy — they offer comfort, identity, and community. This test measures intensity and cost, not shame. Higher scores simply mean the one-sided bond occupies more of your emotional territory. For self-reflection and education only, not a clinical diagnosis or a substitute for professional support.
