The Main Character Test
Are you living your story — or performing it? A serious measure of narrative identity
About this assessment
The first serious self-assessment of "main character energy" — a construct the internet named but psychology has been studying for decades. Inspired by McAdams' narrative-identity research, the spotlight effect (Gilovich, Medvec & Savitsky, 2000), objective self-awareness theory (Duval & Wicklund, 1972), and psychological richness as a third dimension of a good life (Oishi & Westgate, 2022), this test treats the construct honestly: main character energy has a healthy face — authorship of your own story and experiential richness — and a costly face — performing for an imagined audience and casting other people as extras. This test maps which mix is yours across five dimensions: narrative framing, imagined audience, experiential richness, self-centrality, and authorship. The total score measures overall narrative intensity; the subscale profile shows whether it's the empowering or the costly kind. Items are behavioral rather than abstract — they ask about what you actually do, not what you believe about yourself in theory. For self-reflection and education only, not a clinical diagnosis or a substitute for professional support.
